The Alternative Break (AB) program aims to encourage active citizenship through volunteering and community change. These alcohol and drug-free events provide Buffalo State students the opportunity to learn about social issues and community assets, get to know fellow classmates and community members, make an impact, and grow in leadership and teamwork skills. And, it’s fun! The VSLC established the Alternative Break program in 2010 with it’s first spring break experience focusing on urban renewal in Buffalo. Since Alternative Break’s inception, the program has grown to provide opportunities for students to learn, serve, lead and become active citizens during fall, winter, spring, and summer break.
During the 2012-2013 academic year, 35 participants completed 1,400 hours of service in four communities throughout New York, including Buffalo, Rochester, Brooklyn, and Bear Mountain.
Buffalo State participants have the opportunity to :
Meet new students from Buffalo State
Gain skills (electric, painting, tool use, etc.)
Learn about social justice issues while serving
Make new connections across the country
Build relationships with non-profit organizations and those that they serve
Become leaders on campus and in the community
Create social change
Alternative Break immerses student-led teams in unique direct service and experiential learning opportunities with community organizations. Alternative Break provides an outlet for students to become community leaders and the tools to educate others about social justice issues.
Alternative Break strives to develop educated student leaders and active citizens who impact communities.
