2013-2014 Award Categories & Descriptions

 

OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDS

Student Community Service in a Service-Learning Course

Category 1: 14 hours or less required for course                     

Category 2: 15 hours or more required for course

Presented to the student who provided exceptional community service through a service-learning course this semester. Describe the student’s community service experience, and contribution to or impact on the agency, clients served, or broader community.

Service-Learning Course

Category 1: 14 hours or less required for course                     

Category 2: 15 hours or more required for course

Presented to the class that provided exceptional community service through a service-learning course this semester. Describe the class community service experience and the contribution to or impact on the community.

Service-Learning and Academic Learning Connection

Presented to the student who demonstrated exceptional academic achievement through connecting their service-learning experience to course curriculum.  Describe how the student related the service experience to course content through class discussions, reflection papers, projects, etc. and how participation in service-learning affected his or her understanding of academic concepts in the course.

Student Volunteer

Presented to the student who provided exceptional service to a community agency as a volunteer, NOT through a service-learning course. Describe the service and impact on the agency or clients.

Community Service by a Student Organization (including academic club, fraternity, sorority, etc.)

Presented to the student organization that provided valuable service to the community, extending their mission and influence beyond the Buffalo State campus. Describe the service, the contribution to the community, and how the service reflects the mission of the student organization.

Alternative Breaker

Presented to the Alternative Break participant who provided exceptional service, leadership, and reflection during an Alternative Break experience (excluding leadership team members).  Describe the service and the impact on the group of participants and community.

 

OUTSTANDING FACULTY AWARDS

Faculty Commitment to Service-Learning

Presented to a faculty member who demonstrated outstanding achievement in connecting learning with community service, facilitating students’ delivery of useful service to a community partner through a service-learning course, incorporating innovative service-learning methods in a course, developing leadership and citizenship skills among students, and/or providing unique learning opportunities to service-learning course participants. Describe the nominee’s work and impact on the students and/or community.

Faculty Contribution to the Field

Presented to a faculty member who contributed to enhancing Buffalo State’s connections in the community through leadership in advancing students’ community engagement, conducting community-based research, fostering reciprocal community partnerships, and building institutional commitments to service-learning and community engagement. 

 

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY AWARD

Community Partner

Presented to a community agency, group, or institution that demonstrated excellence in collaborative work with Buffalo State, resulting in a partnership that produced positive differences in the community and enhanced student learning this year. Describe community partner’s collaborative work on the development of an effective service-learning or volunteer project and how the project impacted the community and students.
