A Day in the Life of Service: Buffalo State Community Service Day

Students, faculty and staff, alumni, and friends are invited to commemorate the inauguration of President Conway-Turner by volunteering during this event. The VSLC coordinates the service projects and transportation—all you have to do is register (and wear appropriate clothing and shoes). Students will sign up for a project on the day of the event, so don't be late! The doors of Houston Gym will open at 9:15 a.m. for students to select their project, followed by a kick-off ceremony at 9:30 a.m., with buses departing campus at 9:45 a.m. Lunch provided for all volunteers and community partners.

Tentative Service Projects Looking for Volunteers

 Salvation Army

 Have fun making Halloween costumes from donations and help the  thrift store sort other donations as well.

Valley Community Center

Assist this city community center which serves senior citizens and youth. Paint indoors and garden outside.

 Friends of Broadway Market

 Help with “Taste of the Broadway Market” by handing out food  samples and winterizing the market roof garden.

 WEDI Buffalo

This is one of the oldest community gardens on the west side. Come plant flower bulbs and clean up the garden for winter.

RAIN: Help WEDI clean up and repair their new offices.

 American Red Cross

 Arts and crafts! Assist with the creation of recruitment materials for  blood drives at Buffalo State and other local sites.

 Goodwill of WNY

 Process and sort clothing and furniture donations.

 Peace Prints

 Fun gardening and painting projects for this wonderful organization  promoting peace in our region.

 Elmwood Village Association

 Experience more of Elmwood Ave by helping with a community clean-  up and painting project.

 We Care/None Like You

 Get your hands in the dirt! Reclaim an overgrown garden, trim bushes,  and beautify the neighborhood.

 Black Rock Riverside Alliance

 Lend a hand painting in the Black Rock Riverside Alliance offices. 

 Grassroots Gardens

 This garden helps to feed low income individuals in the community.  Learn about what they do and help put the gardens to bed.  

 Farmer’s Garden

 Plant spring flower bulbs and clean up this historic garden area.

 Riverside Planters

 Help a Buffalo State alum manage this community garden - move  garden beds and soil, transplant plants, plant bulbs, clean garden area.

 5 Loaves Farm

 This is such a cool community garden! Come plant a bee garden, turn  compost piles, organize the greenhouse, and visit the chickens.

Wilson Street Urban Farm

Check out this big and beautiful urban farm and assist with farm preparations for the winter months.

Black Rock Heritage Garden

This garden commemorates the war of 1812 and grows lettuce, beans, tomatoes, grapes, and corn. Help the neighbors manage the garden.

Global Book Hour

EER teacher candidates provide neighborhood children and families  with reading activities, a multi-cultural book, and a healthy snack.

Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk

Greek Life students will be raising funds and participating in the walk.

Community Academic Center

The Dr. Aaron Podolefsky AmeriCorps Fellows will lead a family reading  event.

Grant Amherst Business Association 

Buffalo State Rugby Team will conduct a Grant Street clean up.

King Center Charter School Book Club

Teacher candidates in EDU211 create and implement literacy lesson plants with K-5 youth
