Join Dr. Katherine Conway-Turner as Buffalo State participates in Bengals Dare to Care Day, a morning of service in the community, on Saturday, September 19, from 9:15 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with lunch immediately following. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate and be a part of the Buffalo State tradition! Projects will include sorting donations at a city homeless shelter, creating sculptures out of recycled tires, and assisting in local community gardens.
Service projects are identified in collaboration with community organizations across the city of Buffalo and transportation is provided—all you have to do is register! Volunteers will sign up for a project on the day of the event, so don't be late! Check in starts at 9:15 a.m. in the Sports Arena and busses will depart at 9:45 a.m.
American Red Cross: Assist with various behind the scenes components for a blood drive including creating signs and marketing materials while learning about the blood donation process.
Artspace Community Garden: Use your hammer skills to mend and replace raised garden beds, help in putting the garden to bed for the winter, and repair and clean out an urban greenhouse.
Buffalo City Mission: Sort and organize the pantry at Men’s Community Center which serves thousands of individuals in need.
Buffalo Maritime Center: This organization is dedicated to preserving and promoting the sailing and history of boating in WNY. Volunteers will assist with painting, cleaning, moving items, and other light tasks.
Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper at Scajaquada Creek: Explore this important walking path and creek and help to keep our waterway and neighborhood clean.
Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservancy: Assist with park maintenance in beautiful Delaware Park. Remove invasive species, and help in maintaining the gardens. Lots of room for big groups!
Buffalo ReUse: There’s something for everyone in your group to try here. Paint outdoors, help with yard work, repair a floor indoors, and work on product placement in this resale store.
Buffalo Zoo: Landscaping the area in front of Gates 3 & 4 on the Amherst St. side of Zoo where you can talk to the giraffes, rhinos, and hyenas while you work!
Farmer Street Garden: Perfect for a small group! Help ready the garden for Fall at corner of Farmer St. and Gurnsey St and learn from a true community activist.
Five Loaves Farm: Such a cool city space! Visit with chickens, build garden beds, weed vegetable gardens, and prep hoop houses for the winter.
Friends of Broadway Market: Wow! Complete an art project out of recycled tires on the roof of the Broadway Market. Although you will be given templates, a creative mind is needed!
Grant Street Neighborhood Center Pocket Park: Volunteers will plant flowers and shrubs in the renovation of a vacant lot through a partnership with PUSH Buffalo and a grant from Fulbright Canada.
Harriet Ross Tubman School #31: Hammers, nails, and wood oh my! Build a shed and raised garden bed. Also plant, mow and help with light cleaning.
Heart of the City Neighborhood: Dive right in with this grassroots group to conduct a street clean up and prep a community garden for winter.
Metro CDC/ Delevan Grider Community Center: This beautification project at the community center includes painting in the kitchen and dining area and gardening around the outside of the building.
Mullen Manor Resident Council: See a new part of the city- help this group in south Buffalo prepare gardens for fall/winter seasons.
Outdoor Homeless Ministries: If you can’t travel or have limited time, this on campus project to assemble toiletry kits for homeless individuals is for you!
We Care/ None Like You: Help the active citizens of this community group with garden work and meet some of our amazing and hardworking neighbors in the city of Buffalo.
